2011 Lecture
Sunday at 2:00 pm “Bungalow Interiors” with Jane Powell
“ And when we come upon some simple room about which there is a sense of rest and harmony, we do not always stop to analyze the effect to see how it is produced. We feel that there is an intangible idea back of all the detail, and it pleases us, although we know not why.”
Charles Keeler
Bungalows and other early twentieth century houses were filled with wonderful detailing of a sort that is no longer provided except in the most expensive custom homes, yet these were homes built primarily for the middle and working classes. Wooden paneling, built-in furniture, art glass, beamed ceilings, inlaid floors, and impressive fireplaces were featured in modest bungalows, as well as their larger architect-designed counterparts.
In this talk, author Jane Powell turns her thoughts to bungalow interiors, focusing on the details that make these simple and comfortable homes as beautiful and easy to live in now as they were at the time they were built. From fireplaces to flooring, plate rails to paneling, closets to colonnades, lighting to laundry chutes, and everything in between, this lecture will help you to appreciate, restore or recreate the period details of your bungalow.
